James Bond producer speaks out on piracy

Words: Jody Raynsford

Film piracy could destroy the UK film industry: that’s the stark warning from Callum McDougall, executive producers of the latest Bond movie, Quantum Of Solace. Speaking at a recent film industry event, he said: “In the UK, we are often referred to as a cottage industry – and I just think this is a total misconception. Three out of the four Indiana Jones films and 20 out of 22 of the James Bond films were made in the UK with British studios, facilities, crew and talent.” According to McDougall, buying counterfeit discs and illegally downloading films threatens the cash that’s needed to keep investing in new film projects. He added: “Films like Bond fund training schemes for film technicians of the future, and working on films themselves provides a great training ground for budding directors and cinematographers… if there’s no money there for films to be made, it’s like a house of cards, it all comes tumbling down…”

With a one in three people in the UK believed to have been involved in some sort of copyright theft in the last year, could whoever's doing it please refrain (until at least the next couple of Bond films are out). It's not big and it's not clever...

Woolworths Passes - what does it mean for DVD?

Words: Jody Raynsford

Can you hear that creaking? Well, that’s the sound of the DVD market straining under the weight of Woolworths collapse, which apart from the fact one of the UK’s oldest and biggest brands is going to disappear from the high street, is likely to bring both good and bad tidings.

Bad news first: with fewer places to buy DVDs it could hand greater power to those that remain which is rubbish for competition in the long term (but we’ll think about that later). There may also be issues in the festive run up getting the DVDs you want on the high street or supermarket as the Woolworths-owned supplier Entertainment UK which supplies Asda, Morrisons, Borders, Zavvi, Sainsbury’s and WHSmith is also in administration. Chances are, things will be ok this side of Christmas, as trading is going to continue until at least after Christmas. Phew!

And the really good news: it looks like Woolies will be slashing their prices and that could spark a price war among its competitors. Go on treat yourself, pick up a Blu-ray bargain before Christmas. You deserve it…

Really Bad Photoshop Work On Movie Posters Part 2

A while ago I posted some movie posters and pack art that had some, shall we say, less than perfect Photoshop work done on them. Not that I surf the net looking for this stuff... but here are some more examples for your consideration.

Example 1: The Accidental Husband

......Scale!! look at their hands! Look at their heads! Look how big Uma Thurman is!

Example 2: Wanted

Look at the length of her forearm! It's like E.T. with tats.

Example 3: The Full Monty (US Version)

..........What can I say? Mark Addy looks like the inflatable autopilot from Airplane!

Example 4: Licence To Kill soundtrack

Bond's neck is struggling under the strain of his enormous head! Maybe it's Roger Moore wearing a Timothy Dalton mask.

Picture Quiz

If anyone can tell us WHAT film this still is from, WHO that guy is (and the phone number of his tailor), and WHAT in the name of Sonny Jesus is going on in it, they will win a prize:

(Unfortunately, the prize merely consists of the undying respect of your peers and the staff of this magazine, seeing as our stuffy legal people won't let us give away actual prizes, in case it qualifies as some sort of phone-in TV quiz scam. If we WERE allowed to give stuff away, there'd be a cavalcade of astonishingly random once-in-a-lifetime office tat on offer, believe you me. Oh well...)

Anyway, if you reckon you know WHO, WHAT and WHERE the hell this is all about, let us know on THE FORUM...

THE LAST DVD I BOUGHT: HELVETICA

This is a documentary film by Gary Hustwit about visual culture and the proliferation of the ubiquitous type-face, Helvetica. The film explores urban spaces and the typography that inhabits them. Interviews include some of the most illustrious names in the design world: Erik Spiekermann, Matthew Carter, Massimo Vignelli, Wim Crouwel and Neville Brody to name a few.

Accidental Hero

During a serious Friday-afternoon discussion on the many merits of Blu-ray, we couldn't help but notice that our esteemed editor had suddenly turned into Ron Perlman's alter ego, Hellboy:

Ish.

School Photo Day!

Meet the DVD & Blu-ray Review Team!

From left to right, Emma, Mike, Rosie, Dan, Patrick, Ali.

Here we are being all serious. Further less serious, more comedy pictures will be appearing in future issues of DVD & Blu-ray Review.

We thought we might start a band - jury's still out on our band name suggestions over at the forum please. You've got me (Rosie) and Emma on keyboards, Mike's the drummer, Patrick on bass, Ali lead guitar and Dan on vocals. We're clearly going to 'Rawk'. In an indie sort of way.

My Two Bads

'Passing off' is a legal term which tries to prevent the imitation of non-trademarked goods. But it doesn't seem to apply to movies, where it's rife. Here follows the cover art for a disc which caught our eye in Woolies at the weekend:

which we believe to be a dastardly spoiler for this fine (*** - DVD & BluRay Review) film:

Now if the presence of Greg Evigan and DeDee Pfeiffer in the first film isn't enough to give you pause,
please read the reviews on Amazon before making your purchase.

We're sure there are endless similar examples of cover-art imitation but a personal favourite is:

as opposed to:

Oddly, we couldn't find evidence of a Collector's Edition of 12.01 - nor, indeed, an R2 edition of it at all. Poor Supergirl...

We've watched some Watchmen!

We're just back from a sneak preview of some Watchmen footage and, having not signed any embargoes, we're happy to report that it's all looking good.

We saw the opening scene - in the Comedian's flat - and the montage-style title sequence (which covers off a lot of Under The Hood history and has some great visual gags), the prison break (shorter than you'd think but pretty dynamic) and Dr Manhattan on Mars, flashbacks and all. And yes, you do see his big blue penis.

As to the ending and the widely reported disappearance of the giant squid, director Zack Snyder - who was in attendance, along with 'co-creator' and artist Dave Gibbons - joked that it was because he had a "horrible calamari incident as a child".

The latest trailer is
online now and, more importantly, there were cakes:
